Perth Races
Perth Racecourse was voted best small racecourse in Scotland
and the North East for 2002.
One of the most picturesque racecourse settings in the country.
Within the grounds of historic Scone Palace, the course skirts
the banks of the mighty River Tay and weaves its way past
trees that have stood for centuries, since the time when this
was the playground of the Kings and Noblemen of Scotland.
The unique atmosphere experienced at Perth is like no other
in the country. Its intimacy ensures that everyone is close
to the action, and able to rub shoulders with the superstars
of the jumping game.
Perth Farmers’ Markets
Farmers' markets have seen something of resurgence in recent
years in the UK and Perth's Farmers' Market is arguably the
best known in Scotland. Taking place throughout the year on
the first Saturday of each month, Perth's Farmers' Market
is something of a showcase for local producers and growers
and is a rewarding visit in its own right. Look out for fish,
meat and game, baked goods, fruit wines and liqueurs, honeys
and preserves, fruit and vegetables, sweets and herbs. Sounds
tempting? Many stallholders offer free tastings and welcome
visitors on site to find out more about their particular specialities.
Gardens
You’ll find some of Britain’s most colourful gardens
here – from small, privately-owned and lovingly-tended
gardens full of specialist plants and flowers, to sumptuous,
formal gardens in the grounds of stately homes.
Perthshire has a magnificent variety of gardens to visit;
there is Drummond Castle with the formal Italian garden; the
natural heather collection at Bells Cherrybank in Perth; the
woodland and Himalayan delights at Cluny, Branklyn Garden,
described as the finest two acres of private garden in the
country, the wonderful gardens at Blair Castle and Scone Palace,
or the formal gardens in the grounds of the stately home at
Kinross.
Take a walk in the woodland gardens at the Hermitage near
Dunkeld and visit the cathedral or the Beatrix Potter Centre
on the same tour.
