Pitlochry Highland Games

Since 1852, the Pitlochry Highland Games have been held on the second Saturday in September every year, with the only exception being during the wartime. Eager competitors from across the country head to Pitlochry to compete in the Highland Games every year. As a result, it makes for a great day of sporting fun for locals and visitors to the area. Crowds of over 7,000 attend the event every year. Furthermore, tourists from all across the globe travelling to Perthshire to experience the Pitlochry Highland Games.
The History Of Pitlochry Highland Games
Many years ago in Scotland, old Highland Games were revived, and the Pitlochry Highland Games were one of the first to be re-established. Way back in 1852, a recreation ground was created to the south of Pitlochry, where now there sits a small beach of the waters from Loch Faskally.
After the formation of Loch Faskally in 1950, the recreation ground and the Pitlochry Highland Games were relocated to the current ground as it stands today. Up until 1921, the Pitlochry Highland Games were referred to as the Pitlochry Athletic Sports. They were one of the few genuine events where Scottish, British and World records could be registered.
What’s On At Pitlochry Highland Games
This year, the event will take place on Saturday 14th September, with games commencing at 10.30am. The day comprises of traditional Highland Games and events including Highland dancing competitions, individual piping competitions, heavy events and track events.
In the afternoon there will be the annual Tug of War Championship, which is always a great spectator sport for all the family. The main competitions of the day will be:

• Tossing the Caber
• Putting the Stone
• Throwing the Hammer
• Perthshire Heavyweight League
• Perthshire Dancing League
• Junior Heavyweight Event
• Perthshire Junior Piping League
• Scottish Junior Jumps Championship
• Scottish Athletics Clubs Junior Relay Final
• Street Parade of Pipe Bands
• Championship of the Highlands – 3200 metres cycle race
• High jump, long jump and triple jump.
In addition to all of these exciting traditional Highland competitions, there will also be a range of stalls and catering options for visitors and competitors to enjoy. Local businesses will be serving up delicious food and snacks throughout the Pitlochry Highland Games.
